I’m Maxine
illustrator, nature-lover, and mom creating whimsical worlds for little readers.

My art is rooted in the wild South African landscapes I call home and the unfiltered imagination of children. After nearly a decade as a photographer, I picked up a pen in 2022 — and I’ve been telling stories through illustration ever since.

This was one of my earliest digital illustrations — I recently re-drew it, and wow… I didn’t realize how much I’d grown until I saw them side by side!

The first version was cute, but it didn’t really tell a story. The new one feels alive — better values, softer colours, stronger storytelling, and a clearer sense of purpose.

Let this be your sign to revisit your old work — not to judge it, but to celebrate how far you’ve come. 🌊💪

When your art becomes your job, it’s easy to slip into planning, posting, comparing, and overthinking. Somewhere in all of that, you can forget why you started — why you fell in love with creating in the first place.

And that’s okay.
It doesn’t mean you’re ungrateful or that something’s wrong with you. Sometimes you just need to pause, shift your perspective a little, and remember what you loved about it in the first place.

It’s such a blessing to call this my job. 🤍

Got rejected by four agencies this week.
Ouch.
It stings. It pokes at that little voice in your head that says, “Maybe you’re not good enough.”
That’s imposter syndrome talking.

Here’s how I’m dealing with it (and maybe this can help you too):

1. I immediately got to work.
Instead of spiraling, I started digging into my art—figuring out what could be stronger, what wasn’t landing. I found a really good life hack for this too, which I’ll share in an upcoming reel. (It seriously changed how I see my own work.)

2. I reminded myself: rejection isn’t personal.
It feels personal because our art is personal. But sometimes it’s just timing, fit, or a hundred things that have nothing to do with your talent. I keep telling myself: “Their ‘no’ doesn’t define your ‘yes.’”

3. I let myself feel it—but not forever.
I gave myself permission to be bummed for a day or two. I needed that. But after that? No staying stuck. No camping out in sadness. Just onward.

If you’re sitting with a rejection too, just know:
It doesn’t mean you’re not good enough.
It just means the story isn’t finished yet.

Keep going. We’re closer than we think.

I really thought I’d be a wedding photographer forever.
It was all I knew, all I worked for. I built a business from scratch, told hundreds of love stories through my lens, and thought this was the dream.

But then something shifted.
⁣
I picked up my iPad one day and started doodling again—something I hadn’t done since I was a kid. And somehow, those doodles turned into stories. Those stories turned into books.

Now, four years later… I’m a full-time children’s book illustrator. Working on my 10th and 11th books. A homeschooling mama of two little wild things. Living slow and happy on a farm.

I’m so excited to finally share a little peek at one of the illustration spreads from an incredible book I’ve had the honour of working on—One Day at a Time by Maria Roy, launching this May!

This beautiful, faith-based story explores foster care and all the big feelings that come with it. It’s not only a comforting read for foster kids, but also a powerful tool to help others understand the challenges these children face.

It’s been a prayer-filled project from day one, and I’m beyond grateful to have been part of something so meaningful.

I spent way too much time comparing my portfolio to others, constantly asking myself, ‘Why doesn’t mine look as good?’ or ‘What am I doing wrong?’ But no matter how many times I rearranged things, added new pieces, or reworked old ones, I couldn’t figure it out. I knew something was off, but I was too close to my own work to really see it.

That’s when I decided to book a critique session with Kaz @cuddlefishacademy and honestly… it was a total game-changer. She pointed out things I’d never even noticed, like small inconsistencies, pieces that didn’t fit, and ways I could better highlight my strengths. It wasn’t just ‘here’s what’s wrong’—it was actionable advice that gave me a clear direction moving forward.

Now, is my portfolio perfect? Nope, not yet. But for the first time, I feel like I’m on the right track. I have a plan, and I’m actually excited to keep working on it instead of feeling stuck or overwhelmed. I’ll definitely be booking more sessions because having that kind of insight is just invaluable. Sometimes you need a fresh set of eyes (and someone who knows what they’re doing) to help you see what you’ve been missing all along.

I was terrified to leave the safety of a 9-5, but I knew deep down I had to follow my dreams. I wanted to stay home, raise my kids, and be fully present for all the messy, beautiful moments.

Art has always been a part of my life, but I never thought it could actually become my full-time career. Yet here I am—homeschooling my barefoot farm kids, drawing stories for a living, and soaking in the kind of life I only dreamed about.

As the (very overused) song lyric goes: I think I like this little life. And honestly? I wouldn’t choose anything else.

To anyone wondering if it’s worth chasing your dreams—this is your sign. ❤️
